THE GOLF CLUB AT SANCTUARY (330) 499-7721
Ohio golf course review
The Sanctuary Golf Club opened its renovated course for play in July 2002. The course was designed by local golf course architect Brian Huntley and now features 18 new Bent grass greens, tees, and fairways, plus 5 entirely new holes and many new and rebuilt bunkers. The par 71 layout has 5 tee boxes and provides a fair and interesting challenge for golfers of all types.
On course yardage marking includes sprinkler heads measured to the center of the green as well as markers in the middle of the fairway from 100, 150 and 200 yards out. Score cards conveniently feature small diagrams of each hole which provide yardage from tees to bunkers and hazards, and pin placement information. Forty Seven sand bunkers come into play near greens and fairways, and water is featured on eight holes.
There are five sets of tees to choose from measuring in distances and slopes of 6811 yards/129 slope, 6442 yards/125 slope, 6109 yards/121 slope, 5667 yards/116 slope for men and 125 for women, and 4921 with a slope of 117 for women playing the forward tees. This layout features shorter par fours (with exception to the 455 yard #2 handicap 1st) on the front nine, with 3 par threes. The back nine plays almost 700 yards longer and 3 of the 5 par fours are over 450 yards long from the tips.
The terrain is hilly with tree lined fairways that frame the landing zones, and golfers will encounter challenging approaches to greens that range from small to medium in size. There are several creek crossing numerous bridges to connect the playing surfaces. Fairways are built on fairly level ground providing golfers with a comfortable even lie, and most of the mounding is found on the perimeters. The Green complexes are usually open, providing golfers with an opportunity to approach with bump and runs or low flying iron shots.
The clubhouse features a pro shop stocked with apparel and accessories, and a snack bar. There is a practice putting green and a hitting net for a full swing warm up.
