Ohio Golf Course Review
Note: Shaker Run recently completed clubhouse renovations, and has also added 100 new golf carts on property! The Lakeside nine has experienced complete renovation of their sand bunkers, and the original Woodlands nine as well as the Meadows nine will have similar work completed this spring. New photography will be added to this review this summer, to reflect the beautiful improvements to the course and property.
Shaker Run Golf Club, located in Lebanon, is Ohio's #1 ranked public golf course. This beautiful 27-hole Championship course was voted 83rd out of the top 100 by Golf Digest in 2003, and was also ranked in the top 100 by Travel and Leisure Magazine. In 2005 Shaker Run played host to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships. Other Awards include one of Golf Digests best places to play in 2007, with a 4 1/2 star ranking.
On course the Kirby marking system is in place with yardage marked on the fairways every 25 yards from 50 yards to the greens center and out. Sprinkler heads are also marked and measured to center green.
There are four sets of tee boxes to choose from at Shaker Run and the yardage and slope depends upon which 18-hole course is chosen. The Meadows/Lakeside plays the longest with distance ranging from 5046/7091 yards/slopes 118 to 136. The Woodlands/Meadows measures from 5161 to 7072/slopes 119 to 134. The Lakeside/Woodlands is the shortest and measures from 5075 to 6953 with the slope ranging from 121 to 138. Photos in this review were taken from the Lakeside/Woodlands.
On property is a beautiful clubhouse which includes a fully stocked pro shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant and bar. For outings and banquets there is a Grand Ballroom which seats 300 people, and an outdoor pavilion with a beautiful view of the course that can cater to another 200. Practice facilities feature a targeted grass range, and a large practice green used for putting and chipping.
The 27-hole layout has a total of 70 soft sand bunkers (the bunkers on the Lakeside/Woodlands courses have been totally renovated ) situated near the greens and off the sides of the fairways, and 14 holes feature water in the form of lakes, ponds and streams. The fairways are tree lined and hilly with undulations that may cause some uneven lies. There are dramatic elevation changes with elevated tees and greens on each nine-hole course. The mildly sloping putting surfaces are well protected by mounding, bunkers, and water hazards, creating challenging approaches from all angles.
This is a great layout - nicely conditioned and highly recommended. For more info visit our page for the course with direct link to their website by clicking here.
