FOXFIRE GOLF CLUB - Player Course (614-224-3694)
Ohio Golf Course Review
Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne just south of Columbus is a 36-hole championship facility that boasts two courses recognized with 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. The Player layout that opened in 1993 is the more formidable, while the more player-friendly and value oriented Foxfire course is the original design, created by Jack Kidwell in 1974.
The property features a beautiful upstairs bar/lounge with extremely comfortable seating and multiple televisions set up for the viewing of sporting events. Hot and cold sandwiches plus all the standard cocktails and beverages are available, and there also are banquet/outing facilities that can accommodate over 300 guests. Downstairs is a pro shop, and locker rooms with showers are also available for men and women.
Practice facilities include a grass range plus putting/chipping greens. On course, there are measurements to the center of the green on sprinkler heads, and 150 yard stakes are situated in the fairways of all par fours and fives. Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements on the large, undulating putting surfaces, some of which present tiers or ridges.
The photos in this review are of the Player Course, which plays along a gently rolling terrain with manicured bent grass playing surfaces, and intricate contoured sand bunkers on the fairways and greenside. In total there are 55 sand traps on the Player course, and around 30 on the Foxfire. Water comes into play on 8 holes on the Player, and nine on the Foxfire layout. Ponds and lakes, plus challenging green complexes with contoured traps and mounds create a need for accuracy from iron shots that approach the greens on the beautiful Player Course.
Golfers can choose from 4 sets of tees on the Player layout, that measure in distance and slope 7077/134, 6705/129, 6192/126 and 5255/123 slope. The course meanders through a very upscale residential community, with the houses adequately removed from the playing areas. The Foxfire has three sets of tees that play to 6891/126 slope, 6576/121 slope and 5175 yards with a slope of 115 from the front tee areas.
Both courses were in fine shape on our late September visit. Golfers will find the hole diagrams on the scorecards to be helpful…The overall service and quality that one receives for the money is an excellent trade - we highly recommend a round here!
