DEER RIDGE GOLF CLUB (419)886-7090
Ohio golf course review
Deer Ridge Golf Course, located between Columbus and Cleveland in Bellville is one of the finest and most scenic course in central Ohio. Designed by Brian Huntley, the elevation changes make Deer Ridge the most fun, yet challenging courses in the area. The course was completed in 2000, and has been given a 4 star rating by Golf Digest.
The view from the first tee it is a breathtaking. The landing area is 95 ft below the tee box, then the fairway leads back up hill to the green. For the most part, fairways are tree lined and have dramatic slope leaving uneven lies anywhere the ball lands. A few holes on the back nine lay out across flatter ground and feature more traditional hilly, rolling terrain. There are quite a few blind tee shots on course, including the 7th- a 180 yard par three which leads uphill with no view of the green. Putting surfaces are large and undulating with some pretty steep slopes depending on the hole location.
Amenities include an 18 hole championship course, a 12,000 square foot log clubhouse, and practice facility. The timberframe clubhouse was finished in 2006 and features a stocked pro shop, the Sand Wedge Grill serving a full menu- open at 11 a.m., and an outdoor wrap around deck overlooking holes #1 and #10. Practice facilities include a driving range and a putting/chipping green for golfers to warm up every part of the game minus sand play. Banquet facilities can accommodate up to 350 guests in the Banquet room, 160 in the dining room and 50 in the loft.
There are 4 sets of tee areas which measure in distance and slope - 6661 yards/129 slope, 6163 yards/ 123 slope, 5600 yards/ 117 slope and 4813 yards with a slope of 115 for women hitting from the front tees. The distance of these golf holes does not provide the challenge at Deer Ridge, the difficulty lies in the shape of the doglegs, dramatic elevation changes, and slope of the terrain. The course is not overly long, there are only 4 par fours which measure over 400 yards (from tips), and the par 5 fourth plays at only 485 yards from the back tees.
Marking system includes 150 yard stakes in the middle of the fairways on all par fours and fives. Conveniently, all carts also include To The Green GPS units which provide distances to the center of the green from any position. The course provides many natural challenges and 36 sand bunkers are positioned along the landing zones or green sides. Water comes into play on 7 holes, mostly on the back nine.
