CHARDON LAKES GOLF CLUB (440-285-4653)
Ohio Golf Course Review
Chardon Lakes - located just southeast of Cleveland, is a Bert Way/Don Tincher 18-hole championship design that has been awarded 4 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. This layout is considered to be a shot-maker's course, with wide fairways and large, quick rolling greens that often slope from back to front. The property has served host to several qualifiers for the Cleveland Open, which was a stop on the Nationwide Tour.
There is a mix of open and tree lined holes, with strategic bunkering (around 43 sand traps) situated near the landing zones or greenside. Water features heavily come into play with hazards on 11 of the 18 holes, in the form of creeks, canals, lakes and ponds. The course winds through 120 acres in a beautiful setting, with a private type atmosphere.
There are 4 sets of tee areas that provide choices for golfers of all abilities. The tips play to 6775 yards and challenge the best of players with a 136 slope. Alternate sets play to distances and slopes measuring 6186 yards/129 slope, 5578 yards with a 120 slope for men and 131 for women, and 4875 with a player friendly slope of 120 for ladies hitting from the front tees.
On course yardage plates are situated on the fairways and stakes one each side indicate the 100, 150 and 200 yard areas. Cart paths also provide approximate yardages and some sprinkler heads are also measured to the center of the green on all par fours and fives, and small position markers on the flagsticks indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations.
The property features a full practice facility with targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunkers, plus putting green. A pro shop plus men's changing room with shower are located in the clubhouse, which also includes a casual dining area and facilities for leagues and outings.
