BLACKHAWK GOLF CLUB (740) 965-1042
Ohio Golf Course Review
Blackhawk Golf Club in Galena just east of Columbus is 4 star (Golf Digest Places to Play) championship design created by Jack Kidwell in 1964. This course has withstood the test of time, as it is still considered to be one of the prettiest and one of the most enjoyable layouts in Central Ohio. With a very fair rate structure, this is also one of the area's best golfing values.
The topography is extremely hilly, creating some nice shot values over valleys from raised tees that often also play to elevated green complexes. Rye fairways lead to quality bent grass putting surfaces that are medium in size with little undulation - but are frequently sloped from back to front, creating the necessity to land approaches below the hole.
Three sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 6524 yards/115 slope, 6013 yards/110 slope and 4726 yards with a slope of 106 from the forward tees. As these ratings indicate, this is a layout that can be enjoyed by beginners, and is especially women friendly. The aesthetic beauty provided by landscaping that includes native tall grasses, willow trees and tee area flower arrangements, makes the experience all the more pleasant.
On property is a well stocked pro shop plus a snack area/lounge serving beverages and hot/cold sandwiches. Practice facilities include a grass range and putting green. The course is well marked with 100, 150 and 200 yard markers provided on the fairways and cart paths on all par fours and fives (250 also on par fives). Softball size wiffle balls situated at the top, middle or bottom of the flag sticks indicate back, middle or front pin locations.
The scorecards present hole diagrams, helping golfers to locate the hazards along the way. Sand bunkering is understated, but water comes into play on nine holes with a few forced carries off the tee or on the approach. Custom club fitting for many popular brands is available through the pro shop, which also stocks a considerable amount of new clubs and golf accessories.
Blackhawk is a good value golf experience, and is interesting enough to provide a positive experience for avid golfers as well as novices. The wooded, undulating terrain and aesthetic qualities more than make up for the lack of length and slope difficulty.
