SLEEPY HOLLOW GOLF COURSE (440-526-4285)
Ohio Golf Course Review - 7/20/07
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course is Brecksville just west of Cleveland is the crowning jewel relative to golf, in the Cleveland area's Metro Parks system. With its spectacular views of the Cuyahoga River Valley and deep ravines that come into play on 13 holes, this layout is recognized as one of the most beautiful and challenging designs in the metro area.
Designed by Stanley Thompson and originally opened as a private country club in 1925, the course opened to public play in 1963 and features 65 sand bunkers and small sized green complexes that will challenge the iron play and short games of all levels of players. Water comes into play on 5 holes. Both nines begin with holes that play downhill and downwind, and finish with a series of holes that play uphill into the prevailing wind.
The trick is to take advantage of the conditions and score well early on both sides, while surviving the finishing holes, which play longer that the indicated yardage. Golfers will also be challenged by the small green complexes (with the exception of those on holes number two and twelve - which were originally part of the double greens that were more prevalent in that time period) that require accurate approaches and good short games.
For a Metro Park Course, this layout provides exceptional beauty - and is also very playable for all levels of golfers. There are 3 sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6723/132 slope, 6303 yards/127 slope for men and 131 for women, and 5226 yards/116 slope for men and 120 for ladies hitting from the front tees.
On course yardage markers are present on both sides of the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards (250 on par fives), and color coded flags indicate the day's front, middle or back hole locations. The clubhouse features a pro shop, snack bar and locker rooms with showers for men and women, plus banquet/outing facilities for up to 140 guests.
There is a driving range with matt hitting stations and a sand bunker, plus 2 putting greens. For more info, visit our page for this course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
