EAGLE STICKS GOLF CLUB (740-454-4900)
Ohio Golf Course Review
Eagle Sticks in Zanesville is an outstanding Michael Hurdzan design that was recognized as the nation's second best new daily fee golf course by Golf Digest in 1992. Rated 4-1/2 out of five stars, this beautiful championship layout features landscaped tee areas, extremely rolling tree lined fairways, and undulating green complexes. It is a must play for visitors to the central Ohio region! Eagle Sticks now has a 9-star golf package, with their beautiful sister course Longaberger. Check it out through this link: http://www.eaglesticks.com/stay-and-play-packages/.
The property is known for more than golf, as the Inn at Eagle Sticks features elegant dining at its best, and the Mac's Sports Bar is one of a kind in this area, with large screen TV's and full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The Clubhouse banquet room is perfect for outing, meetings and banquets and "Eagle Sticks on the Green" is a first class facility that can accommodate up to 600 people for weddings and special events.
The golf course facilities include a targeted grass range and large practice green for putting and chipping. Golf carts are equipped with Pro Link GPS, which provides accurate measurements from tee to the pin. There also are yardage stakes on the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and markings on the cart paths at 150. Color coded flags on the large, sloping putting surfaces indicate front, middle and back pin placements.
Eagle Sticks presents 4 sets of tee boxes, which play to distances and slopes measuring 6508 yards/120 slope, 6124 yards/117 slope, 5493 yards/108 slope and 4233 yards with a slope rating of 96 from the forward tees. Do not let the relatively short yardage or low slope ratings fool you…this is an interesting and challenging golf experience. Other than on the tee areas, golfers will find it difficult to find a level spot anywhere on the course. The fairways are very rolling and are often lined with sand bunkers, and creeks often intersect or run alongside the playing surfaces.
There are upwards of 80 sand traps and ponds come into play on 4 holes, with creeks present on many others. The environment is quite serene, with covered bridges providing passage across the snaking water hazards and adding aesthetic beauty to the overall experience. The areas around the greens on numbers 3 and 11 are especially breathtaking, and the par four 7th and 8th are also quite beautiful. The greens vary in size and shape, and are often surrounded by grassy swales and mounding which create some tricky up and down situations.
Frankly, we are a bit baffled by the low slope and course ratings… with many wide fairways golfers of all skill levels should be able to locate the landing zones off the tee, but many of the approaches demand accurate iron play, and on some holes there is very little room for error. This is a beautiful golf course, with surprising elevation changes and some wonderful hole designs. Rates are extremely reasonable.
We recommend a round here without hesitation. There are plenty of accommodations and restaurants to choose from in Zanesville…and more top quality layouts are short driving distances away. This is a good location from which to center a golf trip! For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
